Your ideal vacation location according to your zodiac sign

Your ideal vacation destination is destined.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, I am here to assure you that you deserve a vacation. Whether your travels take you down the road or around the world, the time is nigh.

If money is a prohibiting factor, put that s**t on a credit card in the name of self-care and get to packing. We’re all going to die, folks and it may as well be with a casket full of photos and a small mountain of debt. Let it ride and let the good times roll. While the following list provides general guidelines for the sort of sojourn in line with each zodiac sign, I highly recommend a deep dive into your individual birth chart to identify what element is most pronounced and which is minimally present.

Are you heavy on fire but parched for water? Consider a trip somewhere by the sea or within range of a river, waterfall or salt lake. An abundance of air and an absence of earth? Get your feet on the ground with a camping excursion where you can put your feet in the clay and warm your flannel by the fire.

Also worth investigating is astrocartography, a subset of astrology that recognizes the relationship between the planetary placements within the birth chart and different locations around the world. Using an online system and armed with your birth info, you can generate a personalized map. Following the lines of the map allows you to see where in the world different energies in your birth chart will be more intensely felt and easily expressed. Looking for creative inspiration and/or transcendental escape? Follow your Neptune line. Trying to have a hot, problematic affair or get in a bar fight? Look for locations along your Mars line.

Wherever you decide to go, may your travels be safe and your memories merry.

ARIES (March 21 – April 19)

Iceland

Aries is a cardinal fire sign that craves excitement but requires chill. Iceland, known as the land of fire and ice provides the answer to both extremes. A cornucopia of volcanoes, glaciers, hot springs, and people who won’t dispute the existence of elves, Iceland is the perfect spot for weary rams to stoke their inner fires and chill their proverbial tits. The 800 odd mile Ring Road that circles the country presents the opportunity to rent a red SUV and scream/cry/singalong to the weird sonic scapes of Iceland’s favorite daughter, triple Scorpio, paparazzi pummeling priestess and eruption enthusiast Björk.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)

Provence, France

Taurus is ruled by Venus, planet of love, beauty, indulgence and aesthetics and there is perhaps no more densely Venusian location than Provence, France. Here, bulls can frolic freely among the lavender fields, drink copious amounts of wine and eat themselves to gout with goat cheese. Perhaps best of all, Provence is the perfume capital of the world and workshops and boutique perfumeries provides the chance for Taurus folks to have an olfactory professional design them a signature scent based on their pheromone profile and preference and disdain for things like musk, bergamot, fresh cut grass, leather, tobacco and the sweat of their enemies.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)

Silent Retreat, Lake Tahoe

Gemini is ruled by Mercury, planet of communication, exchange, epic poetry and lowly chatter. As such, natives have hungry minds that are easily influenced by the type and quality of information they consume. Their attentions are often diverted into rabbit holes, social media sewers, conspiracy theories, Reddit threads and chat group brawls. The anecdote for all that noise is a digital detox and silent retreat along the serene shores of Lake Tahoe. When they emerge restored but restless, the bright casino lights and bad decisions of Reno will be close by.

CANCER (June 21 – July 22)

Florida Keys/Key West

The Florida Keys offer the right combination of nostalgic kitsch, debauchery and water access that will leave Cancers feeling right at home. In Key West, which claims more bars per capita than any other city in America, crabs will find many a hole in the wall in which to drown their persistent sorrows. Fellow Cancer Ernest Hemingway is among the most famous dead ex-residents of Key West and visitors can tour his home, now a museum, and or choose to frequent one of the many bars where he left his mark in both ink and urine. Bonus: May through October is stone crab season, inviting Cancers to indulge in a little sustainable cannibalism should the feeling strike and the allergies allow.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Teotihuacan, Mexico

In terms of the physical body, Leo rules the heart and the archeological site of Teotihuacan was once considered the center of the universe, which coincidentally, is how Leos conceive of themselves. The ancient city includes vivid murals, temples for sun worship and the very goth sounding Avenue of the Dead. Leo energy is synonymous with the fifth house of creativity, pleasure and love affairs and Teotihuacan is a scant 25 miles from Mexico City where Frida Kahlo’s home, La Casa Azul, stands as a testament to her artistic spirit and tempestuous relationship with her corpulent, dasterdly, sister bagging husband Diego Rivera.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)

Foraging in Maine

Maine offers myriad opportunities for Virgos to forage for food and contemplate the infinite.

In the major arcana of the tarot, Virgo is represented by the Hermit, a figure that retreats into the wilderness to procure cures for others. In kind, Virgo folk seek validation through acts of service and do well with a walk in the woods. Virgos also low key love hard work with edible payoff and Maine, with its miles of coastline and endless acres of forest, offer this mutable sign ample opportunity to free range the fruits of the earth and bounty of the sea.

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)

Venice

Ugly things aren’t just unpleasant for a Libra, they’re physically debilitating which makes Venice, a sinking city renowned for its painterly light, sun drenched piazzas and elegant wooden water taxis, an aesthetic sanctuary. Symbolized by the scales and balances, Libras are adept at evaluating quality and prefer the high life, top shelf and max thread count. Venice is quick to answer with a bounty of elegant restaurants, fine hotels, master glassworks and art museums. As an alternative, a luxurious all inclusive resort just about anywhere where options are limited but standards are high would suit this notoriously indecisive air sign.

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)

Las Vegas

Scorpios love a den of iniquity and Las Vegas is city that trades exclusively in sin. Most buildings on the Strip are windowless and climate controlled, making them ideal lairs for this literal and metaphorical cave dweller. Deeply observational, scorpions will find an endless parade of characters to study and questionable human behavior to assess. There’s a precipice of the apocalypse/moral ruin/existential edge energy to this desert oasis that this fixed water sign can really vibe with. Further, Scorpio rules the eighth house of sex, death and regeneration and I have it on good authority that the front door can be found somewhere below Circus Circus.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)

Greece

The sign of Sagittarius is symbolized by the centaur, a mythical creature that was half man, half horse and all about the pursuit of knowledge and the art of shooting your shot. Adventurous archers will find much to love and little to need in Greece, the seat of ancient philosophers and modern home of yacht hopping, pleasure cruising, foam parties, feta and disco techs. Sagittarians, perhaps because of their metaphorical hooves, are prone to clumsiness and Greeks celebrate that kind of blundering with shouts of “Opa!” and the tradition of breaking plates on purpose.

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)

Mount Everest

Capricorns prefer to be on top; sexually, financially and otherwise. making Everest, or more realistically, Everest base camp an aspirational destination. On a metaphorical level, Everest grows roughly 1.7 inches every year and Capricorns only get better and better looking with age. Further, Caps only feel comfortable indulging when they’ve earned their ease through sweat and toil, and fortunately Everest Summit Lodges and Mountain Lodges of Nepal heed that need by providing luxurious accommodations along the road to meet the ‘Goddess of the Sky.’

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)

Freetown Christiania, Denmark

Ruled by unruly Uranus and structured Saturn, Aquarians ride the razors edge between maintaining order and utterly abandoning it. Socially conscious, inside the strange mechanical heart of each water bearer, between the lightbulb filaments and freeze dried ice cream, beats a utopian dream. This fact make Christiania, a self-governing society within the city limits of Copenhagen, an ideal destination to gather intel and inspiration.

PISCES (February 19 – March 20)

Joshua Tree

Still unfinished in 1978 when it's creator George Van Tassel died, the Integratron sat unused until 1987. Van Tassel believed, when finished, it would rejuvenate human beings with the use of electromagnetic oscillations.

Ever awash in the feelings of others and the dreamscapes of themselves, Pisces will be well served by the arid climate and stark beauty of Joshua Tree, California. Beyond the National Park, fish will find themselves out of water but very much at home hunting the ghost of Gram Parsons at the fabled Joshua Tree Inn or booking an emotionally and sonically recalibrating sound bath at the Integratron, a geomagnetic cupola, said to have been built with telepathic directions from extraterrestrials for “purposes of rejuvenation and time travel.” In deep and far out, just like they like it.

Astrology 101: Your guide to the stars

Astrologer Reda Wigle researches and irreverently reports back on planetary configurations and their effect on each zodiac sign. Her horoscopes integrate history, poetry, pop culture and personal experience. She is also an accomplished writer who has profiled a variety of artists and performers, as well as extensively chronicled her experiences while traveling. Among the many intriguing topics she has tackled are cemetery etiquette, her love for dive bars, Cuban Airbnbs, a “girls guide” to strip clubs and the “weirdest” foods available abroad.
