X briefly suspends pro-DeSantis Super PAC account just before GOP debate

Never Back Down was briefly shut down.

The leading pro-Ron DeSantis Super PAC’s account on X, formerly Twitter, was temporarily suspended Wednesday morning, hours before the first GOP debate, a rep for the organization confirmed.

X surmised that its “automated systems incorrectly picked it up as ‘spam,’” strategic communications director Matt Wolking wrote on the platform.

The suspension came hours before the scheduled release on the platform of a pre-recorded interview of former President Donald Trump by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Wolking, who was part of Trump’s failed 2020 re-election campaign, speculated that the GOP frontrunner’s acolytes may have had something to do with the suspension.

“Given their celebration, we have asked @X @elonmusk to disclose whether these Trump-backed accounts and their affiliated bot network have recently engaged in mass reporting against the @NvrBackDown24 account in order to manipulate X’s rules,” he posted.

Wolking included screenshots of pro-Trump users cheering the account’s suspension.

“While our follower count has not yet been fully restored, we appear to be back. Follow Never Back Down to get the facts the Trump campaign doesn’t want you to see! We are hoping to receive more details about the cause of this suspension on debate day, @elonmusk. Please,” Never Back Down shortly before noon Wednesday.

Never Back Down has been sitting on a mountain of cash from a myriad of donors keen on boosting DeSantis.

By the end of June, it reported just under $97 million cash on hand, according to Federal Election Commission records.

DeSantis famously launched his 2024 campaign back in May during a glitchy discussion on Twitter Spaces with platform owner Elon Musk.

The Florida governor is the top-polling Republican set to be on the Fox News debate stage in Milwaukee Wednesday evening.

Trump, who has a 41.1-percentage point lead over DeSantis in the most recent RealClearPolitics average, is skipping at least the first debate, citing his front-running status.

An X spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
