Woman, dog shot dead helping friend leave abusive relationship

A young woman and her pet dog were fatally shot in Texas over the weekend while trying to help a friend leave an allegedly abusive relationship, authorities said.

Police were called to an apartment in the Houston suburb of Spring around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday and discovered a woman, later identified as 28-year-old Shantavia Reddick, with multiple gunshot wounds in the elevator lobby of the complex’s parking garage, KHOU 11 reported.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called the incident a “tragic situation stemming from domestic violence.”

Reddick had arrived at the apartment to try and help her friend — Humphrey’s girlfriend — leave an “ongoing domestic disturbance,” before the pal’s boyfriend, Dimitri Humphrey, allegedly opened fire on her and her pet dog, killing them both, Gonzalez said.
