We tried Gwen Stefani’s makeup line

The Hollaback Girl’s debut makeup line is finally here, and it’s “Hella Good.”

Gwen Stefani launched GXVE Beauty last week with eight products priced from $21 to $48, including eyeshadow palettes, eyeliners, brow pencils and a priming face oil.

But the real stars of the show are the 52-year-old No Doubt frontwoman’s lipsticks. Finally, fans can snag her signature red in three different formulas: matte, satin and liquid.

Pronounced “give” and inspired by how Stefani’s signed her name for years — with a “G” and an “X” representing a kiss — GXVE is now available to shop online and in-store at Sephora.

And while celebrity cosmetic lines are a dime a dozen these days, the Grammy winner’s got real beauty experience to back hers up. Before hitting it big in the music biz, she worked as a mall makeup artist in her hometown of Anaheim, Calif. And to this day, she continues to do her own glam for live performances.

But to paraphrase one of Stefani’s tunes, is the magic really in the makeup? In our latest episode of “Style Trial,” I share my first impressions of the superstar’s products after testing them all. It doesn’t get more, well, original than this luxe, velvety lippie in Stefani’s iconic scarlet shade. While many matte formulas tend to feel drying and tug at your pout during application, I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortably this one glided on. Once applied, it looked gorgeous — and barely budged for hours.

Love Gwen’s signature red, but prefer a silky finish? Anaheim Shine’s for you. The most comfortable of GXVE’s three lipsticks when it comes to all-day wear, it goes on like butter and feels lightweight. That said, it’s not transfer-proof — so if you’ll be masking, eating or drinking, keep that in mind.

A happy medium of sorts between Original Me and Anaheim Shine, this liquid formula goes on wet and dries down to a matte finish in seconds; plus, it offers perhaps the most intense color payoff of the bunch. It passed my “kiss test” with flying colors, too — so rest assured your crimson lip will stay put all day.

While I typically prefer liquid eyeliner to pencils — and am somewhat surprised that Stefani didn’t launch with a liquid option, considering her love for a sharp wing — I was delighted to find that once I drew on my cat eye, it didn’t smudge or smear for the rest of my workday (especially surprising since the formula’s quite creamy). If you’re looking to blend this out, make sure you do so quickly before it sets!

Available in four shade combos — matte neutrals, golden bronzes, rose golds and matte smoky hues — these quads lean more subtle than bold. The color payoff was so-so on the two matte palettes I tried, but the shimmery shades might offer more bang for your buck.

My favorite of the two brow products included at launch, Hella On Point’s super-fine tip makes precise strokes a cinch. Stefani smartly included a spoolie brush on the opposite end, too — great for blending and then brushing your brows into place.

Similarly equipped with color on one end and a brush on the other, this chisel-tipped pencil would work well for those looking to fill in larger areas of their arches.

This aloe- and meadowfoam seed oil-infused formula is meant to be applied before makeup — and while I’d never tried a priming oil before, my usual base went on beautifully afterward. Since my skin’s quite dry, I also appreciated the boost of hydration it offered, though I suspect those who prefer fragrance-free skincare products might be put off by the (subtle, but definitely present) scent. I can only hope this stuff will help me age as gracefully as Stefani.
