Underdog too juicy to pass up

There’s just one Premier League match on Monday. Judging by the odds, it figures to be a relatively drama-free affair. Liverpool is -500 favorites to win its home opener, with Crystal Palace sitting at a robust price of +1400 (14/1).

But there is more to this matchup than the odds imply.

For one, Crystal Palace proved to be one of the Premier League’s best giant-killers last season, which was their first with Patrick Vieira as manager. Palace went 4-2-6 (W-D-L) against the top six teams in the Premier League and earned victories against Manchester City (as a +2000 or 20/1 underdog), Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United.

And while the Eagles dropped both matches against Liverpool, they do have the makeup of a team that can handle the Reds’ prolific attack. Palace finished last season ranked third in big scoring chances allowed, fourth in non-penalty expected goals conceded, and fifth in shots allowed.

Despite only coming away with a draw against Fulham in Week 1, Liverpool’s offense looked to be in bright form with Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez looking particularly sharp. But there are some concerns around the rest of the lineup. Midfield maestro Thiago Alcantara is out, while center-backs Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are both doubtful.
