Top DeSantis donor halts funding, demands campaign reset

The largest individual donor to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign said he would halt additional contributions for the time being and urged the flagging GOP pol to reset his campaign.

Robert Bigelow, a hotel entrepreneur, has so far poured $20 million into the pro-DeSantis “Never Back Down” super PAC, but Team DeSantis has struggled to break through against former President Trump, who continues to dominate the GOP field.

Bigelow, the founder of Las Vegas-based Bigelow Aerospace, said he was pausing his own contributions.

“Not until I see that he’s able to generate more on his own. I’m already too big a percentage,” Bigelow said. “A lot of his donors are still on the fence.”

Bigelow’s financial heft looms large for the DeSantis camp. The next largest donor to “Never Back Down” is venture capitalist Douglas Leone, who gave $2 million, according to campaign filings.

The most recent polls show Trump with more than 50% support among Republican primary voters.

DeSantis has consistently placed second among a divided field of possible alternatives.

“He does need to shift to get to moderates. He’ll lose if he doesn’t . . . Extremism isn’t going to get you elected,” said Bigelow — adding that he had communicated his concerns to DeSantis as well.

Bigelow specifically cited DeSantis’ decision in April to sign a six-week abortion ban as a mistake that alienated middle-of-the-road voters.
