Timeline of Tyre Nichols’ arrest and fatal beating

Tyre Nichols was heading home on a Saturday night when police pulled him over just a few blocks from his mom’s house — setting the stage for his fatal beating at the hands of five officers later charged with his murder.

Here’s a look at what we know so far about the events leading up to, and after, the aspiring photographer and FedEx driver’s death:

A routine traffic stop turns deadly

Jan. 7, 8:24 p.m.: Memphis cops from the Scorpion unit pulled over Nichols’ car at the corner of East Raines Road and Ross Road. The Memphis Police Department initially claimed Nichols was driving recklessly. Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis, the first woman to lead the department in its 194-year history, said she could not confirm that allegation.

8:25 p.m.: Officers pull Nichols from his car, and try to pin him to the ground. Nichols cries, “OK! I am on the ground,” and, “You guys are really doing a lot right now. I’m just trying to go home,” as the officers allegedly swear at and threaten him, video shows. They appear to try and Taser Nichols, who slips past them and tries to flee down Ross Road as two cops give chase.

8:30 p.m.: Backup arrives at the original location of the traffic stop and asks where Nichols is. By that point, Nichols is about a half-mile away.

Battered

8:33 p.m.: The officers allegedly beat, slap, pepper spray, and kick Nichols, who was on the ground crying “Mom!” according to the footage. His mother’s home was only about 60 yards away. At one point, Nichols is lying defenseless as two cops pin him down, while a third kicks his face multiple times. Another hits Nichols with a baton while a colleague eggs him on, yelling “Hit him!” He is punched in the head at least six times.

8:37 p.m.: Nichols is handcuffed after being dragged to the side of a nearby car and propped up like a broken rag doll. At one point he falls over to one side and a cop pushes him back up. Officers are seen on the video milling around and murmuring to each other but no one seems to pay any attention to the injured Nichols.

8:41 p.m.: Two paramedics arrive but wait about 15 minutes before treating Nichols.

9:02 p.m.: An ambulance arrives and takes Nichols, who was complaining of shortness of breath, to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.

Death

Jan. 10: The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announces Nichols had died due to injuries sustained in the “use-of-force incident with officers.” An autopsy report later found he “suffered excessive bleeding caused by a severe beating.”

Officers learn their fate

Jan. 20: The five officers involved in the Nichols’ case — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr., and Justin Smith — are fired after an internal investigation found they used excessive force and failed in their duties to intervene and render aid.

Jan. 26: All five officers are charged with Nichols’ murder and surrender to law enforcement. Additional charges include aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression in addition to second-degree murder.

Jan. 27: The officers are released from the Shelby County Jail, after each post between a $250,000 and $350,000 bail.

‘Acts that defy humanity’

Jan. 27: Four videos of the traffic stop, arrest, and brutal beatdown of Nichols are released by Memphis police, sparking protests across the nation. Davis, the police chief, warns the beating is akin to what Rodney King suffered and that the footage reveals “acts that defy humanity.”
