The most ‘sexless day’ of the year is Friday — here’s why

The most “sexless day” of the year is coming — so you might not be.

The demand for UK sexual health services hits an annual low on Dec. 16, leading medical experts to determine that most people aren’t getting frisky on Dec. 15, the Daily Mail reports.

Dr. Babak Ashrafi, an expert with Superdrug Online Doctor, drew this conclusion by analyzing requests for emergency contraception prescriptions and sexually transmitted infection tests, tying the mid-December day to the phenomenon known as “winter vagina.”

“A drop in temperature can make skin and hair become dry and dehydrated, but not many people know that the temperature change can also have an effect on your vagina,” Ashrafi explained to the Daily Mail.

“A lack of moisture in the air is partly to blame, as well as heating indoors being used more often,” he added. “The vagina and surrounding area can become dry, itchy, and irritated, resulting in uncomfortable sex.”

A decrease in hours of daylight during the winter can also upend circadian rhythms, the internal clock that controls sleep patterns, the release of hormones, appetite, digestion and body temperature.

“Less sunlight exposure and spending more time indoors also results in vitamin deficiencies, which can make you feel more tired in winter months,” Ashrafi continued. “As energy levels are much lower due to tiredness, this can affect your libido and sex drive.”

Winter is notably a time of heightened stress — holiday obligations and festivities fill the calendar, while the push to finish to-do lists by the end of the year ramps up.

“Stress and worries can impact your sex drive, as well as other areas of your life, which is why it’s important to improve the ways you manage stress,” Ashrafi said.
