Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney Making FX Series on Their Soccer Club Purchase

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are teaming up with FX. The comedic duo will join forces for Welcome to Wrexham, a docuseries tracing the lives of the working-class people in Wrexham, UK. The pair will enter as two Hollywood stars who plan to take ownership of the town’s historic-yet-struggling football club. Sounds like a solid plan — except for the fact that neither Reynolds nor McElhenney have any experience working in football. They’ve also never worked together before.

Both stars posted a clip teasing the upcoming series, which was ordered for two seasons by FX. The Ted Lasso-esque series will chart the pair working with Wrexham’s “Red Dragons,” who have been around since 1864, making them one of the oldest football teams in the world. Welcome to Wrexham will send the pair into locker rooms, pubs, and ultimately “will track Rob and Ryan’s crash course in football club ownership and the inextricably connected fates of a team and a town counting on two actors to bring some serious hope and change to a community that could use it,” FX said in a statement provided to Decider.

The teaser sees Reynolds and McElhenney sparring with a spiteful translator who seems unwilling to welcome the famous duo into her hometown.

“Rob McElhenney has been an all star on Team FX for years and now has partnered with the formidable Ryan Reynolds to bring glory to the ‘Red Dragons’ in the docuseries Welcome to Wrexham,” said FX’s President of Original Programming Nick Grad. “Rob and Ryan will take fans inside the sport as never before, pairing their genuine love for the game with the welcome challenge of building on the heritage of this club.”

Welcome to Wrexham will be executive produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Nick Frankel, and John Henion. Stay tuned for more details about Welcome to Wrexham‘s release date, trailers, and more.
