Ryan Reynolds emotional after ‘romantic’ Wrexham promotion

Ryan Reynolds shared memorable photos and a message following the promotion of his fifth-tier Welsh soccer club Wrexham that he co-owns with fellow actor Rob McElhenney.

The long-beleaguered club won itself promotion to EFL League 2 on Saturday, with Reynolds and McElhenney reaping the rewards of their $2.5 million business venture made in November of 2020.

“Everything I own smells like champagne, beer and grass. I’m still somewhere between giggling and sobbing,” Reynolds tweeted. “This town and this sport is one of the most romantic things on earth. Thank you, @Wrexham_AFC.”

Wrexham pulled out a historic 3-1 win against Boreham Wood for the National League title, securing them a spot out of the fifth-tier league where they’ve dwelled for the last 15 years and onto the English Football League.

At the sound of the final whistle, Reynolds and the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star shared a long hug while appearing to wipe away tears as Wrexham fans raced onto the Racecourse Ground’s field to celebrate the long-awaited victory.

McElhenney also tweeted about the promotion saying, “I have no words other than THANK YOU.”

The celebrity buyout served well for the club in the two seasons leading up to the promotion, as Wrexham saw a significant jump in season-ticket sales after Reynolds and McElhenney made the club anew with fresh players, a head coach, worldwide fame, and big-name sponsorships such as TikTok and Expedia.

The progress can be watched in FX Network’s show “Welcome to Wrexham” and where viewers can now expect to watch the club enter this new era in season two.

Reynolds and McElhenney eventually took to the field to celebrate with the team and Wrexham fans, where they were also photographed holding and kissing the National League trophy.
