Rex Heuermann planned to retire in South Carolina

Accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann had reportedly been planning to retire on his secluded property in South Carolina and live near his older brother.

”[Craig Heuermann] keeps saying his brother is going into retirement,” a neighbor in rural Chester, SC told Fox News Digital Monday.

“He told me when I first moved down here that his brother owns that lot across the road, and that his brother’s going to retire down here, and when he does, everybody’s leaving,” the neighbor added.

Rex, 51, apparently planned to “buy everybody out” once he arrived, the neighbor told the news outlet on condition of anonymity.

The suspect – who lived in Massapequa Park, Long Island, with his two kids and second wife, Asa Ellerup – bought several lots of land in the Palmetto State’s Chester County two years ago, records show.

The property belonging to Craig, 57, features a front gate bearing two unwelcoming signs – one reading “Keep out/No trespassing” and the other that says, “No warrant/No Entry,” according to Fox News Digital.

The neighbor claimed that when he went to mow the grass one Sunday, Craig hit him from behind with a “steel pole.”

“I called the police because I was going to shoot him, but my wife talked me out of it. We called the police, and when we talked to [Craig], he said, ‘Well, I told him not to cut grass on Sunday,’” the neighbor told the outlet.

He also alleged that Craig — who once killed a police captain in a crash while drunk and “coked up” — left business cards reading “I’m an a—hole” in mailboxes along his street.

”I keep my distance. … I think he’s as crazy as a bed bug,” another neighbor told Fox News Digital also on condition of anonymity.

Multiple attempts by The Post to contact Craig Heuermann have been unsuccessful.

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that it has assisted in gathering evidence in the case, including obtaining a search warrant for a Chevrolet Avalanche that first linked Heuermann to the murders.

The impounded pickup was the second of the distinctive Chevy model owned by Heuermann tied to the murder probe, authorities said.

Another model of the vehicle was pulled from the alleged serial killer’s Nassau County, Long Island home over the weekend.

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to murdering Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. He has been named the prime suspect in the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

Authorities also are investigating the deaths of the seven other people whose corpses had been found at Gilgo Beach more than a decade ago. Those cases had not been linked to Heuermann.
