Remains in garbage site likely missing Georgia toddler J’Asiah Mitchell

Authorities believe there is a “high probability” that the child remains found in a Georgia garbage facility this week belong to a toddler that went missing several days ago – and his father is a suspect.

The body of a small child were found Wednesday afternoon at the East Point Transfer Station, the East Point Police told The Post in a statement.

“We have not confirmed the identity of the child J’Asiah Mitchell; however, there is high probability based on the circumstances surrounding this case,” the statement read.

The remains are now being identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Police were led to the location of the body through “digital information,” 11Alive reported.

The remains are also believed to have been exposed to the elements.

“I don’t think this is a coincidence since that 2-year-old child is missing, the body is the size of a 2-year-old, so it’s a possibility that’s the case,” East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan told Channel 2 Action News.

J’Asiah was first reported missing on Aug. 16.

His father, Artavious North, 23, claimed the child was abducted from his car by armed kidnappers who cut him off at a red light late at night.

Within a day, however, authorities announced that they determined there was no armed kidnapping.

North was arrested and charged with making false statements, though he was already in jail on separate charges at the time, Channel 2 said.

He is now a suspect in his son’s disappearance, police told The Post.

“I will tell you, several of [North’s] family members who are very forthcoming have tried to talk to him, and they are pleading with him, ‘Tell the truth,’” Buchanan told 11Alive.

“I will tell you that his family is just as concerned about the child as the mother’s family. It’s just that he is not being cooperative.”

North and J’Asiah’s mother, Asia Mitchell, were not in a relationship at the time of the child’s disappearance, Channel 2 noted.

When J’Asiah was initially reported missing, Mitchell told police that her son had visiting with his father for the night.

She is now raising money for the search on GoFundMe.

“We want to pay for helicopters, whatever we need to do to search for J’Asiah,” J’Asiah’s maternal grandmother, Leriesa Mitchell, told FOX 5 Atlanta.

“Ground-wise, air-wise, drones, state-to-state. Whatever we need to do to look for my grandchild.”

On Friday, investigators drained a small pond near the East Point apartment complex where North lived.

Family members also combed through the complex on Sunday and handed out fliers to neighbors.

The search for J’Asiah bears tragic similarities to the disappearance of Quinton Simon, a 20-month-old from Savannah who was reported missing from his family’s home on Oct. 5, 2022.

Quinton’s mother, Leilani Simon, claimed he had been kidnapped.

She was arrested and charged with felony murder, in addition to 18 other criminal counts, after her son’s remains were found in a landfill.
