Pro-choice advocates say Biden should defy court ruling that would ban abortion pill: poll

A vast majority of abortion rights advocates say President Biden should ignore a final court decision that would ban an abortion pill, a new poll showed Sunday.

According to the CBS News survey, 69% of abortion rights Americans say Biden should discount any final high court decision banning mifepristone — a prescription pill that terminates pregnancy.

That polling lines up with New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has urged the Biden administration to defy a federal judge in Texas’ decision to outlaw the abortion pill.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito on Friday issued a temporary stay of the lower court ruling; the pill can still be sold in limited circumstances in states where abortion is legal.

The survey showed, however, 80% of respondents who mostly oppose abortion say the Federal Drug Administration should comply with any final court ruling outlawing the abortion pill; 20% disagree.

The poll found 67% of respondents said mifepristone should remain available for those in states where abortion is legal; 33% said it should not.

In a political breakdown, 84% of Democrats said mifepristone should be available in pro-abortion states, as did 72% of self-identified independents and 46% of Republicans.

A Pew Research Center poll released last week found 53% of US adults said the use of a prescription pills to terminate a pregnancy should be legal in their state. 

The CBS survey, which queried 2,065 US adults from April 12-14, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
