‘Preppy Killer’ Robert Chambers released from NYS prison

The infamous “Preppy Killer” Robert Chambers — who brutally strangled a teenage girl inside Central Park more than three decades ago — was freed from prison on parole this week in his separate drugs and assault case.

Chambers, 56, walked out of New York’s Shawangunk Correctional Facility on Tuesday after serving 15 years of a 19-year sentence for running a cocaine and heroin operation out of his Manhattan apartment, according to state Department of Correction records.

The convict’s whereabouts in the aftermath of his release remain unknown, but he’ll be on parole until 2028, records show.

Calls made to numbers listed as Chambers’ relatives were not immediately returned.

Chambers, who had been in the slammer since 2008 for peddling drugs, gained notoriety for the slaying of Jennifer Levin during the summer of 1986.

Levin’s death rocked the Big Apple and Chambers, who gained the “Preppy Killer” moniker, was convicted of manslaughter in the horrific case.

Chambers and Levin, ages 19 and 18, respectively, had run around in the same upper-crust social circle that partied at hotspots like Studio 54 and the fateful Dorrian’s Red Hand Bar on East 84th Street.

The pair had been intimate on two occasions and the college-bound beauty expressed interest in becoming serious with Chambers, who had a reputation as a ladies’ man, fervent drug user and petty thief.

After Levin yet again shared her deep feelings for Chambers inside Dorrian’s in the early hours of Aug. 26, 1986, Chambers led her away to Central Park to have sex near the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

For some unknown reason, Chambers became violent and strangled Levin as she ferociously scratched and clawed for her life in a three-minute struggle.

The 19-year-old savagely beat her with his fists and smothered her with his denim jacket before bolting from the scene.

A bicyclist called 911 after finding Levin’s battered corpse clad in a miniskirt with her legs spread-eagle and her blouse and bra pushed up to expose her breasts.

Investigators quickly clocked Chambers as a suspect after noticing deep scratches on his face and neck consistent with the bruising on Levin’s hands sustained during the fight.

After springing countless lies, Chambers eventually admitted to cops that he killed Levin — but claimed it had been during a round of rough sex.

Under a plea deal, Chambers pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received five to 15 years in prison.

He was released in 2003 after serving the maximum sentence.

He was back behind bars just two years later after being convicted of a misdemeanor drug charge but was given a light 90-day sentence.

Chambers was sent back to prison in 2008 after cops uncovered the cocaine and heroin operation he was running with his girlfriend, Shawn Kovell, out of their East 57th Street apartment.

Kovell received probation, but Chambers was slapped with a 19-year sentence — four years longer than his punishment for killing Levin.
