NYU Langone Health notches awards for patient care

NYU Langone Health was crowned the top spot for patient care out of more than 100 academic medical centers across the country, the hospital announced Thursday.

The New York City hospital clinched the accolade from Vizient, Inc. Wednesday when it accepted the Bernard A. Birnbaum Quality Leadership Award for top-notch patient care and also earned the Ambulatory Quality and Accountability Award for its superior outpatient care.

Vizient is the US’s largest healthcare performance improvement organization and considered 107 academic medical centers in their rankings for patient care this year. About 97% of all academic medical centers are part of the organization.

Dr. Robert Grossman, NYU Langone’s CEO, lauded the designations.

“Outstanding quality and safety standards are the hallmarks of our institution, reflecting a culture dedicated to excellence and the best outcomes for our patients no matter where in our system they receive care,” said Grossman, who is also the dean of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, in a statement.

“No other health system in the country has our aggregate of top quality and safety rankings from respected arbiters including this most recent leadership designation from Vizient.”

The Birnbaum award considers six categories: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity.

The Ambulatory Quality and Accountability Award honors NYU Langone as the best in physician practice out of 55 networks. The health care system has been a top performer in outpatient care since the award was created, the hospital said.

Vizient considers five domains for that award, including access to care, quality, efficiency, continuum of care and equity.

“NYU Langone continues to expand the breadth and depth of our services so patients can access the highest quality primary and specialty care in their own communities,” said Dr. Andrew Brotman, the senior vice president and vice dean for clinical affairs and strategy, chief clinical officer at NYU Langone.

“We are improving overall health by providing the best physicians and services in the communities we serve.”

NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn and NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island were within the top 10 of the Birnbaum Quality Leadership ranking of specialized complex care medical centers.
