Nets guard Dennis Schroder makes professional soccer debut in Germany
Nets guard Dennis Schroder is taking up another sport in his downtime.
The veteran point man from Germany, who is entering the last year of his current contract — at a $13 million cap hit for next season — is venturing into professional soccer.
The 30-year-old made his pro soccer debut on Wednesday for FC Germania Bleckenstedt, a sixth-tier club in Germany.
Schroder played 62 minutes in what, unfortunately for him, became a 5-1 loss to SC Gottingen 05.
“Not the result I wanted for my 1st ever official football game but thx to my brother in law @daniel_io for making it happen,” he wrote on Instagram.
Schroder and Germania Bleckenstedt will return to action to face VfL Wahrenholz on June 6.
Prior to this past season, Schroder notably led Germany to their first-ever FIBA World Cup gold medal in September.
Schroder won MVP of the tournament after leading the Germans to a win over Serbia in the final game after having the eighth-best odds at winning the championship ahead of the tournament.
Schroder and Team Germany earned an automatic bid to play in the Summer Olympics beginning in July.
The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 19.1 points and 6.1 assists per contest in the World Cup.
This past season, he was traded from the Raptors to the Nets, recording 14.6 points and 6.0 assists for Brooklyn
