Netherlands scores on late free kick before losing to Argentina at World Cup

Wow.

Hours after Croatia and Brazil needed extra time to solve their World Cup semifinal, the Netherlands forced Argentina to do the same.

Down 2-1 in the 100th minute of the contest — the last of the 10 added for stoppage time — Dutch midfielder Teun Koopmeiners lined up for a free kick and the last chance to send the game into extra time.

Instead of challenging Argentina goalie Emiliano Martínez at the net, Koopmeiners opted to pass the ball forward, where Wout Weghorst found the back of the net, tying the game at two, and sending the into extra time.

The euphoria was short-lived, however, with Argentina eventually winning on penalty kicks, 4-3.

Argentina advances to the semifinals and will next play Croatia on Tuesday.
