My honest review of the shampoo

Beauty is not one-size (or formula) fits-all.

A single shade of concealer doesn’t work for everyone, and a light pink lipstick won’t look the same on all skin tones. Similarly, a shampoo made for curly hair won’t work as effectively on a head of straight hair.

It seems obvious, as we each possess unique attributes and characteristics — from body type to nail shape.

Function of Beauty understands this and has been a leader in hair care customization since 2016.

By carefully choosing ingredients for safety and performance, the brand tailors each formula to meet the demands of Individual hair and skin types.

More recently, the brand launched in Target stores across the nation, placing customization in the hands of shoppers everywhere.

Function of Beauty fans can become their own chemist by selecting and mixing a range of hair goals into their customizable shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments.

It sounds promising, but I wanted to find out if it was worth the hype, so I put the Function of Beauty x Target line to the test. Keep reading to learn about the products, how the process works and if it’s worth it.

How Function of Beauty x Target works

You got the rundown of the products, but how does the Function of Beauty Target line work?

Using the Function of Beauty x Target line is pretty simple. All it takes is three easy steps.

  1. First, determine your hair type and choose the best base products for your hair.
  2. Then, decide if you want to add some treatments, like a leave-in conditioner or hair mask, to your cart. (P.S., we highly recommend that you do.)
  3. Next, select up to three desired Hair Goals booster shots per base. Simply snap the top off at home and pour them into your formulas. Shake each base (or stir, depending on your base selection) for about 15 seconds.

That’s all there is to it. It’s customizable hair care at your fingertips!

What I chose

I was beyond excited when I found out I was going to test the Function of Beauty x Target collection. Who wouldn’t want to try a colorful, good-for-you-and-your-hair customization line?

I would categorize my hair as wavy, as I have 2a strands that are loose and tousled. Therefore, I opted for the Wavy Hair Collection. I snagged the shampoo, conditioner, leave-in treatment, and hair mask.

While I love my hair, I do struggle with frizz, so I naturally gravitated towards the Anti-Frizz booster shot, which uses beetroot extract, which is said to hydrate and soften hair.

I also added the Lengthen booster shot and the Shine booster shot to achieve the mermaid hair goals of my dreams.

How it worked

Once I secured the goods, I headed to my bathroom to create my concoction.

I snapped off the tops of my booster shots and poured all three into each of my bases. I shook each one for about 15 seconds and stirred my wavy hair mask.

Next, I jumped in the shower and lathered my hair with shampoo. It smelled of sweet peach and created the perfect lather, while the conditioner felt soft and silky.

The hair mask was also so simple to use. I left it in my hair for about three to five minutes and then rinsed it. And holy wow, my hair was seriously soft.

Stepping out of the shower, I wrapped my strands in a microfiber towel, letting them dry off a bit.

After releasing my damp hair, I added a few pumps of the leave-in wavy treatment, brushed, and blow-dried my hair.

Soon enough, I had gorgeous, full hair that felt clean and hydrated.

Final Verdict

Now, it is important to note both the pros and cons.

The pros were hands down the ease of use. In no time, you can have your very own customizable hair care. The price is also beyond affordable and much lower than your average high-end finds. Not to mention, my hair felt amazing after using the product lineup the very first time.

Though, there are some cons. First, choosing which booster shots you want to add to your base products can become overwhelming. There are so many options that it’s hard to decide — it’s a blessing and a curse.

Secondly, if you want custom hair care, you have to put in a little effort, as you have to do the opening, pouring and mixing of the booster shots. But that’s barely a con since it’s beyond easy.

So what’s my final verdict? I say buy the dang Function of Beauty x Target hair care right now. It checks off all the boxes and is something I can see myself using for a long time.

Best of all, if you get bored of your particular mix of products, all you have to do is opt for new booster shots. It’s that simple to cater your hair care to your desires and wants.
