Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood charged with rape

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, police confirmed on Saturday.

Manchester Police said Greenwood was arrested in the Trafford area on Saturday and placed into custody after being charged. He was initially arrested in January after being accused of trying to rape a woman on Oct. 22 of last year.

“The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm,” Janet Potter, deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS Northwest, said in a statement.

The Manchester United forward was first arrested in January after photos and videos were posted online. He has also allegedly behaved in a coercive manner for the past three years and was also accused of assault in December of 2021.

All three charges relate to the same female complainant, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

As a result, Nike has also terminated its sponsorship deal with Greenwood. He was also suspended by Manchester United from playing or practicing within hours of the allegations becoming public.

Greenwood is due to appear in Magistrates Court in Manchester on Monday.
