Live updates of hostage release and temporary cease-fire

Two American women being held hostage by Hamas are expected to be freed this week, the Biden administration said Monday.

Earlier in the day, a deal was reached to extend the temporary Israel-Hamas truce for another two days, said officials from Qatar and Egypt, which have been key mediators in the ongoing conflict.

The announcement came on the final day of a four-day cease-fire and hostage exchange that went into effect Friday.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk landed in Tel Aviv on Monday and kicked off his visit to the Jewish state by accompanying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a tour of a kibbutz attacked by Hamas on Oct. 7 — as the tech billionaire fights off claims that he’s antisemitic.

Also, new photos Monday show a smiling Abigail Edan, the 4-year-old Israeli-American freed Sunday, surrounded by family at an Israeli hospital. She became an orphan in the Oct. 7 terrorist attack when Hamas killed both her parents and kidnapped her.

How many hostages have been released?

  • Hamas has released a total of 58 hostages since the temporary truce took effect Friday
  • Israel has released 117 Palestinian prisoners since Friday
