Kevin Spacey’s lawyer calls sexual assault accusers ‘liars’ during closing arguments

Troubled Hollywood star Kevin Spacey’s lawyer branded three of the actor’s sexual assault accusers “liars” during his closing arguments Thursday.

Addressing the jury in London’s Southwark Crown Court, attorney Patrick Gibbs said Spacey’s accusers hopped on a “bandwagon” of lawsuits seeking a hefty payday.

“A man who is promiscuous, not publicly out, although everyone in the business knows he’s gay, who wants to be just a normal guy,” he told the court. “It’s a life that makes you an easy target when the internet turns against you, and you’re tried by social media.”

Referring to Spacey’s fourth accuser, Gibbs pleaded with the jury not to convict the two-time Oscar winner — known for starring in “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty” — for making a “clumsy pass” at a man in a bar on a boozy night out.

“Maybe in this country… we don’t convict people of a crime… for making a clumsy pass,” he told the court.

The actor, appearing under his real name of Kevin Spacey Fowler, 63, pleaded not guilty to 12 charges that include sexual and indecent assault counts and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

The four accusers alleged Spacey aggressively groped them and in one case performed oral sex while they were passed out.

The “House of Cards” star, who referred to himself as a “big flirt,” appeared in court over the sexual assault charges stemming from his time as an artistic director at a local theater in London between 2005 and 2013.

Spacey, who was granted unconditional bail, could face life in prison if found guilty of the most serious offense.

The most serious accusation against him is a charge of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent when he allegedly forced a man to have oral sex.

The alleged victims are all now in their 30s and 40s.

Prosecutor Christine Agnew last month called Spacey a “sexual bully” who “delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable.”

One of the accusers testified that Spacey’s unwanted fondling “wasn’t like a caress… It was like a cobra coming out and getting hold.”

However, the actor’s attorney told the jury that the complainants had reimagined consensual encounters “with a sinister spin” or, in some cases, simply “made up” their accounts.

The actor — who came out as gay in 2017 — last year said he’s “confident” he will be able to prove his innocence in court.
