Iran reports drone attack on defense facility in Isfahan

Bomb-carrying drones struck an Iranian military facility in the city of Isfahan overnight — though two out of three aircraft were caught in “defense traps,” authorities said early Sunday.

Three drones were involved in the blast, which took place around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and caused only minor damage to the defense factory, the Iranian Defense Ministry said.

Two of the drones were successfully shot down using “defense traps.” The third that hit the building only caused minor damage to the roof.

No one was injured in the attack, the ministry said.

The ministry has not said who it believes carried out the attack, which comes amid growing tension with the West over Tehran’s nuclear work and supply of arms to Russia during its war against Ukraine.

Video shared by Iranian media shows a sudden flash of light at what the IRNA news agency has called an ammunitions factory.

Iran’s English-language Press TV aired videos that captured the moment the drone fell down along the Imam Khomeini Expressway, a busy road that takes drivers to the holy city of Qom and the country’s captial, Tehran.

Video showed a small crowd gathered along the expressway, watching an explosion outside of the dark military facility.

The attack “has not affected our installations and mission…and such blind measures will not have an impact on the continuation of the country’s progress,” the ministry said.

There have been a number of explosions, fires and cyber attacks on Iranian military, nuclear and industrial facilities in recent years. In the past, Iran has accused its enemy Israel of planning attacks using agents inside Iran.

Separate from the attack, on Saturday a fire broke out at an oil facility near the north-western city of Tabriz, though the cause of the fire has not been determined.
