Hit-and-run crash suspect is son of disgraced ex-lawmaker

The man busted for the hit-and-run crash that killed five young women getting ready for a wedding in Minnesota is the son of a fiery Black Lives Matter protest leader-turned-politician — who was ultimately booted by the Democrats over his shocking history of domestic violence arrests.

Derrick Thompson, 27 — the son of ex-state rep. John Thompson — was busted on suspicion of murder Monday over the horrifying caught-on-camera crash that killed Sabiriin Ali, 17, Sahra Gesaade, 20, Salma Abdikadir, 20, Sagal Hersi, 19, and Siham Adam, 19.

He already has a long history of convictions — including a felony from an earlier hit-and-run crash in California in 2018 that left a woman in a coma for several weeks, according to reports from the time.

Cops found more than 17 pounds of marijuana and over $20,000 in cash in his car at the time, KEYT News had noted.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2020 — but was released earlier this year thanks to time served and good behavior, KSTP-TV said.

Thompson also has a slew of convictions in Minnesota, including for possession of drugs and weapons, fleeing police and giving a false name, according to records obtained by the Pioneer Press.

His driver’s license was eventually revoked — but reinstated on June 7, less than two weeks before Friday’s deadly crash.

Thompson’s dad was until recently Minnesota’s most high-profile state lawmaker — but for all the wrong reasons, having been accused of domestic violence and lying about being racially profiled by police.

Ex-state rep. John Thompson became a fiery Black Lives Matter protest leader after Philando Castile — whom he described as his best friend — was shot dead during a traffic stop on July 16, 2016.

He was investigated for possible felonies in 2020 — while already a Democratic candidate for the state House — for an incendiary protest outside the house of Minneapolis police union president Bob Kroll.

Activists smashed piñata effigies of Kroll and his wife, while the elder Thompson was caught on camera shouting “[Expletive] Hugo” and “You think we give a [expletive] about burning Hugo down?” according to WCCO-TV.

John Thompson later apologized, and was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in November 2020, assuming office the following January.

Within months, he was mired in controversy after accusing a cop of pulling him over on July 4, 2021, for “driving while black” — while later admitting it was his fault for driving with out-of-state plates.

Amid outrage at his behavior, a records search by Fox 9 showed that John Thompson already had a disturbing history of arrests for domestic violence — many in front of young kids.

John Thomspon was busted in 2003 for allegedly hitting his girlfriend in the face in a parking lot as her 5-year-old daughter watched on. He pled guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

He allegedly attacked the same girlfriend nearly a year later — putting his hands around her neck and threatening, “I’ll choke you until you can’t breathe anymore,” according to the records.

The politician then began “hitting her in the head, punching her in the face and then he grabbed her and threw her into the kitchen table, which broke” — seen by her daughter and his two sons.

The girlfriend told police that a day earlier he had screamed at her, “F–k you, f–k your daughter, I hope you both die.” It was not clear if charges followed.

In September 2009, cops responded to a domestic violence call involving Thompson and two women — with the soon-to-be lawmaker allegedly exposing his penis to them and two young children.

“I’m the man, you can all s—- my d–k,” he said , according to the records. However, charges were not filed, the outlet noted.

The elder Thompson was also accused of exposing himself in front of children in March 2010, telling his then-girlfriend to “kiss the tip,” according to the documents.

She told cops that the activist also grabbed her around the neck while threatening, “I’ll choke you until your voice box stops.” Charges were also not filed in that case.

At the time, Thompson’s attorney, Jordan Kushner, said his client “maintains the allegations are false and he was never found guilty of them in a court.”

He claimed that “the police reports are a product of the campaign to silence an American African man who speaks out against powerful and abusive interests, and not the product of any effort to uncover truth.”

Still, it sparked a huge ethics debate in the state House — with a separate complaint also filed after Thompson openly called another lawmaker a “racist.”

He was expelled by the local Democrat party leadership in September 2021, just eight months after taking office.

“Rep. Thompson’s actions, credible reports of abuse and misconduct, and his failure to take responsibility remain unacceptable for a member of the Minnesota House,” House Speaker Melissa Hortman and Majority Leader Ryan Winkler said in a joint statement at the time.

He continued as an Independent until January this year, after losing his re-election bid.

John Thompson has yet to comment about his son’s arrest, and could not immediately be reached early Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara released a statement saying the police department is investigating the release of the suspect’s name as well as the horrifying video of the crash.

“Both are very concerning,” he said, noting an internal review will be done to determine the source.
