Fani Willis rebukes Jim Jordan over probe of Trump case

Fulton County, Ga., District Attorney Fani Willis fired back at Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan’s Thursday over his probe of her Trump election interference case.

Late last month, Jordan (R-Oh.) demanded a tranche of documents detailing communications between Willis and federal officials about former President Donald Trump, arguing her case could interfere in the 2024 election.

But Willis, a Democrat, cried foul, chiding in her response Thursday that it’s “clear that you lack a basic understanding of the law.”

Notably, Jordan did not take the bar exam despite graduating from law school.

“Your attempt to invoke congressional authority to intrude upon and interfere with an active criminal case in Georgia is flagrantly at odds with the Constitution,” Willis wrote in a blistering nine-page letter to Jordan.

“There is absolutely no support for Congress purporting to second guess or somehow supervise an ongoing Georgia criminal investigation and prosecution.”

She stressed that his “violation of Georgia’s sovereignty is offensive and will not stand.”

Willis had slapped 41 counts against Trump and 18 of his allies last month for alleged meddling in the 2020 Georgia election, including a racketeering charge against each of them.

Trump is specifically facing 13-counts and has already pleaded not guilty, vehemently denying wrongdoing.

Willis did disclose several examples of federal funding for programs that her office has tapped into, which was a key dataset Jordan sought.

In lieu of providing all the material Jordan requested, she ripped into his letter piece by piece with her response and provided him with examples of racist threats she’s endured.

“As it seems you have a personal interest in the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, you should consider directing the USDOJ to investigate the racist threats that have come to my staff and me because of this investigation,” she wrote.

Jordan has pursued a similar strategy against other prosecutors who’ve taken aim at Trump. Earlier this year, he subpoenaed Mark Pomerantz, a former lawyer in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.

Bragg, who lodged a 34-count indictment against Trump over an alleged hush money payment scheme that was unsealed in April, sued him in response.

On Thursday, Jordan sent a letter to Special Counsel Jack Smith informing him about his congressional inquiry into allegations of prosecutorial misconduct by Jay Bratt, one of Smith’s top lawyers.

In addition to helming the House Judiciary Committee, Jordan also leads the Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.

A spokesperson for the Judiciary Committee did not immediately return a request for comment.

Trump is facing 91 total felony counts spanning across four different indictments that could result in upward of a 700 year prison sentence.

He remains the overwhelming frontrunner in the 2024 GOP contest.
