Democrats demand probe on whether informant made damaging claims on Hunter to help China

Two Democrats on the House Oversight Committee are demanding a review of whether indicted Hunter Biden informant Gal Luft levied damning accusations against the first son to save his own skin.

House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-NY) wrote a letter to Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) outlining their issues with the 57-year-old Luft, a dual US-Israeli citizen.

“We are concerned that an official committee of the House of Representatives has been manipulated by an apparent con man who, while a fugitive from justice, attempted to fortify his defense by laundering unfounded and potentially false allegations through Congress,” Raskin and Goldman wrote one day after Manhattan federal prosecutors unsealed an eight-count indictment against Luft.

The charges against Luft also include arms trafficking, brokering sales of Iranian oil in violation of US sanctions, and making false statements to investigators about those activities.

“We urge you to immediately initiate an investigation into whether the Committee may have been unwittingly duped by Mr. Luft in furtherance of the [Chinese Communist Party’s] interests as well as any potentially false statements made by Mr. Luft,” Raskin and Goldman wrote in the letter.

Additionally, the pair is demanding Democrats on the panel gain access to “all materials and information” Luft may have turned over to Republican investigators.

Luft, who was arrested in Cyprus this past February and fled after being released on bail prior to his extradition, has claimed the indictment is meant to stop him from testifying to the Oversight Committee about payments the Biden family received from individuals working for the CEFC China Energy conglomerate, and who had ties to Chinese military intelligence.

Federal prosecutors claim one of those CEFC officials, Patrick Ho, gave Luft’s think tank at least $700,000 for Luft to “recruit and ‘educate’” former CIA Director James Woolsey to “make public statements … which were in the interest of China.”

Raskin and Goldman also highlighted allegations that Luft lied to FBI agents during his March 2019 interview with the bureau, in which he claimed to have brought forth his Hunter Biden accusations.

“These recent revelations naturally raise broader concerns about the credibility and motivations of other purported whistleblowers that Congressional Republicans have relied on to support unfounded and baseless allegations,” the congressmen wrote.

“Sadly, the Luft episode severely undermines the credibility of the critical function of whistleblowers in this body.”

Comer has said he still wants to call the fugitive as a witness in the panel’s investigation of the Biden family.

In response to the Democrats’ letter, Comer claimed in a statement that Raskin and Goldman had “either been duped by the Bidens or they are intentionally misleading the American people.”

Gal Luft
Gal Luft was arrested in Cyprus in February and jumped bail while awaiting extradition.

“It’s astonishing that Ranking Member Raskin and Rep. Dan Goldman didn’t mention that the Bidens received millions through their shell companies from the same CCP-linked company that paid Gal Luft,” he added.

“Hunter Biden and Joe Biden even planned to share an office with this CCP-linked company, CEFC. Gal Luft is a credible witness to the Bidens’ influence peddling schemes because he too was getting paid by the same shady company,” Comer went on.

Comer previously questioned the timing of the indictment against Luft.

“The timing is always coincidental, according to the Democrats at the Department of Justice,” Comer told Fox News host Laura Ingraham Monday night. “It’s just amazing the Department of Justice moves so quickly against some people.”
