Daughter of critically ill freed hostage rips Red Cross: ‘Medically neglected’

The daughter of an elderly hostage left in critical condition after being freed by Hamas terrorists Sunday is blasting the Red Cross for allegedly failing to take care of her “medically neglected” mother.

Alma Avraham, an 84-year-old mom of five released as part of the ongoing hostage deal between Israel and Hamas, was flown by helicopter directly from Gaza to Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center in Israel, where she remains in critical condition, her daughter Tali Amano told reporters.

“My mother didn’t deserve to return like this,” Amano said, before placing blame on humanitarian relief organizations including the Red Cross and the United Nations for allegedly not doing more to try to get access to the hostages while they were being held, according to the Times of Israel.

“My mother was medically neglected,” the devastated daughter added, detailing how her mom went without her daily medications for more than 50 days, only adding to the elderly woman’s physical distress.

By the time her mother finally got to the hospital in Israel on Sunday night, she barely had a pulse and her body temperature was frighteningly low, Amano said.

“She arrived with a heart rate of 40 bpm and a body temperature of 28 degrees Celsius [82.4 degrees Fahrenheit], on the verge of losing consciousness and injured all over,” Amano said.

Her mother has been hospitalized in the intensive care unit, where she remains in critical condition.

“She was abandoned twice — once on Oct. 7 and a second time by all of the organizations that should have saved her,” Amano charged.

“I hope they haven’t managed to defeat her,” she added, signaling that she hopes her mother will soon recover.

Humanitarian organizations such as the Red Cross have claimed they have been stymied by the terrorists when trying to get to the hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently indicated that at least the Red Cross might be allowed to reach those in captivity as part of a temporary truce deal.

Avraham was released by Hamas on Sunday as well as 16 other hostages, including nine children, bringing the total number freed since the four-day cease-fire to 58.

Also released over the weekend was the first American citizen to be freed during the cease-fire: a girl who turned 4 years old in captivity and whose parents were murdered by Hamas during its Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

A Russian Israeli was also freed — the first Israeli adult male to be released during the cease-fire. He was working as a sound engineer at the Tribe of Nova music festival when Hamas launched its surprise incursion.

In return for the hostages, Israel agreed to hand over dozens of Palestinian prisoners and send truckloads of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The conditions of the cease-fire allow Hamas to extend the truce one day for every 10 hostages freed.
