Dansby Swanson excited to see wife Mallory Pugh’s NWSL games

Dansby Swanson expects to have a boisterous presence at Chicago Red Stars games.

Last week, Swanson left the Braves for the Cubs in free agency on a seven-year, $177 million deal. Swanson’s wife, Mallory Pugh, a member of the USWNT, plays for the Red Stars in the NWSL. In his introductory press conference with the Cubs on Wednesday, Swanson said he’s eager to see more of her games.

“It means the world for me to be able to be here with her,” Swanson said. “Obviously, we just got married, and the last four years doing distance was D.C. first [for her], then it was Jersey for a little bit and then it was Chicago. It was tough at times not being in the same city and able to enjoy life together as a married couple. Being able to serve our purpose together in God’s kingdom means a lot to each of us and to be able to do that in the same city is pretty amazing.

“Also, I always complain every year that I don’t get to watch her play that much except for on my iPad. It’s funny, we used to be on the plane, and I’d have her games up, and the team would be huddled up around my chair watching her games. Now hopefully we can go and be a little rowdy and ruckus at the actual stadium, and cause a little stir.”

Jon Greenberg of The Athletic observed that it was “pretty funny” to look Pugh at the press conference see her shaking her head at the remark.

The 28-year-old Swanson and 24-year-old Pugh got married earlier this month. The shindig took place at the Ritz Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Ga.

Additionally at the press conference, Swanson told an emotional story about finding out that his grandfather was in hospice the day after their wedding and rushing to get there to see him before he passed.

The shortstop explained that he would run into his grandfather’s house every day and cajole him into hitting practice ground balls — which interrupted the man’s ritual of watching the Cubs on WGN. While they lived in Georgia, Swanson explained, his grandfather rooted for the Braves first but also had a big interest in the Cubs.

“He loved baseball so much and all he ever wanted me to be was doing what I’m doing now,” Swanson said. “So, having won a championship in Atlanta for one of his favorite teams, we just felt that the Cubs, which were his second-favorite team, that bringing a championship to this city was just what we felt called to do.”
