Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen has shared a message from the hospital with his teammates after he collapsed in a terrifying scene during a match at soccer’s European Championship.
Eriksen, 29, was recuperating Sunday at a Copenhagen hospital after the terrifying medical episode during the match against Finland in Parken Stadium, the Danish Football Association said.
“This morning we have spoken to Christian Eriksen, who has sent his greetings to his teammates. His condition is stable, and he continues to be hospitalized for further examination,” the association said, CNN reported.
His collapse on Saturday forced the game to be temporarily suspended while medics worked frenetically to give him chest compressions.
Eriksen’s teammates choked back tears and prayed as they formed a protective circle around him to shield him from the view of the around 15,000 fans in shocked silence.
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen said that Eriksen nearly slipped away.
“He was breathing, and I could feel his pulse. But suddenly that changed,” Boesen said Saturday. “And as everyone saw, we started giving him CPR.”
He was eventually carried off on a stretcher to a loud ovation, with his teammates walking by his side.
The Union of European Football Associations later announced the game would resume, with Finland going on to win 1-0.
“Of course you can’t play a game with such feelings,” Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand said. “What we tried to do was incredible. It’s incredible that the players managed to go out and try to play the second half.”
