Buckingham Palace locked down after man arrested for throwing shotgun cartridges

Buckingham Palace was put under lockdown Tuesday after a man was caught carrying and throwing suspicious items onto the royal grounds — just four days ahead of King Charles’ Coronation.

The UK’s Metropolitan Police arrested the man after he approached the gate around 7 p.m. local time and “threw a number of items” suspected to be shotgun cartridges.

The cops confiscated a “suspicious bag” from the man and conducted a controlled explosion as a precaution.

“Officers worked immediately to detain the man and he has been taken into police custody,” Chief Superintendent Joseph McDonald said in a statement.

“There have been no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries to officers or members of the public.”

Buckingham Palace said neither the king nor his wife Camilla were at the palace at the time of the incident.

In the hours before the arrest, King Charles welcomed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the castle. Though the details of their conversation have not yet been released, Albanese said his trip to the UK would focus on the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement.
