Brandon Thompson admitted to beating UWM student, doesn’t recall rape: docs

Self-described “monster” Brandon Thompson told cops he “saw red” before he allegedly raped and beat an unsuspecting University of Wisconsin-Madison student within an inch of her life.

The 26-year-old told investigators he remembered repeatedly hitting the stranger over the weekend, but could not be sure that he sexually assaulted her, according to court records obtained by the Wisconsin State Journal.

Thompson silently hung his head as he virtually attended court proceedings Thursday as prosecutors detailed “one of the most horrific sexual assaults in recent memory here.”

“What we’ve learned in the course of the last 72 hours … is that this defendant was simply driving down the street and saw the victim, had no prior interaction or contact with the victim, and spontaneously decided to pull his car over, most of this occurring on camera, follow her for some distance around the Downtown area, and then attack her,” Dane County Deputy District Attorney William said at the initial hearing.

Thompson allegedly broke the woman’s jaw, smashed out several of her teeth and strangled her after pouncing on her as she walked through the college town’s commercial district around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The survivor remains hospitalized in critical condition after being diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.

She has yet to give police a statement due to her condition.

After allegedly brutalizing the woman, Thompson remained at the scene “covered in blood” and told witnesses that he had been taking a “high walk” when he found the naked, bloodied and unconscious woman lying on the street, the criminal complaint states.

A witness told police Thompson seemed “antsy” after they decided to call 911, which he chalked up to being intoxicated around officers.

He fled by the time police arrived, but was arrested three days later after police connected him to a car spotted on neighborhood surveillance footage.

Thompson reportedly told investigators he was angry that night and flew into a wild rage after seeing his victim.

He claims to have blacked out and woke up to find the woman on the ground.

“The only thing I remember is just hitting,” he allegedly told detectives. “She came across a monster.”

According to the criminal complaint, he said he couldn’t recall sexually abusing the victim, but admitted that he could have done so.

A DNA sample would later directly connect Thompson to the woman, however, according to police.

The most “terrifying” aspect of the assault — other than the lack of relationship between the attacker and victim — was that Thompson had a clean record before allegedly committing the heinous crime.

“This man is perhaps our greatest public safety threat that lives in this county right now,” Brown said, asking for a $2 million bail.

“He appeared to fit in so well, a normal person in our community.”

Thompson’s defense team argued that his clean record — as well as “inconsistencies” they claimed to find in the prosecution’s case — should warrant a $10,000 bond, which the judge immediately shot down.

Thompson was ultimately ordered to be held on a $1 million sum.

He faces charges of first-degree sexual assault, first-degree reckless injury and strangulation.
