Bed in garage, toilet detached from wall
It was more like a scare B&B.
A Maryland man has gone viral on TikTok after recounting his stay at an exorbitantly expensive “Airbnb from hell” — which he says had a bed in the garage, a lock on the air conditioning unit, and other amenities too terrifying for a haunted house.
Nick Doty detailed the house-rental horror show in a clip that has clocked up 750,000 views on the social media app.
“We are currently staying at an AirBNB that might be the most pathetic excuse for a house that I’ve ever stayed at in my life,” Doty declared in the clip.
According to the video, posted in response to a query on stingy landlords, he and his friends rented the San Diego property so they could attend a friend’s wedding.
The five-bedroom, five-bathroom house is listed for $4.9 million on Zillow. Doty’s group allegedly splashed $1,250 per night for the abode.
The rental reportedly boasted an average rating of 4.78 out of 5 on Airbnb before its listing disappeared, Insider reported.
Doty claimed that the first issue with the “dumpster fire of a house” was that the owners divided the mansion in two, so they get “one half and another group gets the other half.”
Another problem was that the house did not actually have five bedrooms like the listing claimed, with the TikTokker alleging that the “first bedroom was in the garage.”
“This is the bedroom, it smells like gasoline,” lamented Doty while opening the door to the intra-garage sleeping quarters like a satirical episode of “MTV Cribs.”
If that wasn’t off-putting enough, there were no vents in the room and the smoke detectors were expired, according to Doty.
The owners also purportedly put a crib in the unvented garage room, presumably so the adults wouldn’t be the only ones who had the pleasure of huffing in a car exhaust in their sleep.
In a follow-up clip on the house from hell, Doty explained that the lamps are all “decorative” as as room was without outlets — save for a floor lamp whose cord is threaded through the wall and plugged into the socket of the adjacent bathroom.
“This is not legally a bedroom but one of us was planning to stay here and now they’re sleeping on the coach,” Doty described.
The peeved renter proceeded to ask his friends what their “favorite” parts of the house were — revealing even more horrors.
These included a “reclining” toilet that was not attached to a wall, shower knobs that came off when twisted, and a $25 per day air conditioning unit with a switch sealed in a lockbox until renters Venmoed the homeowner the money.
According to the video, the oven also took hours to heat while the shower took 12-and-a-half minutes to get hot.
Not to be outdone were the sooty floors that blackened the soles of the renters’ feet as if they’d traipsed through a coal mine.
“All this could be yours for $5 million and a lifetime supply of anti-depressants,” quipped the TikTokker.
In a statement, Airbnb told The Post: “In the rare case a listing isn’t as advertised, our AirCover protection for guests provides support with refunds and another place to stay, and we take action on issues brought to our attention. As no issues had been reported to us by these guests, we have contacted them to look into their experience and offer our support.”
Airbnb said Doty has yet to reach out to them regarding the allegedly appalling accommodation.
The rental firm’s guidelines state that the listing page “should accurately describe the home and reflect the features and amenities that will be available at the listing from check-in to checkout.”
“When repeated or severe violations of these ground rules are reported, Hosts or their listings may be suspended or removed from the platform,” they stated.
The Airbnb’s host, who goes by Scott, refuted Doty’s allegations according to Insider, claiming that there was no “garage bed” and that the group had the oven on the wrong setting, and that there was the requisite number of outlets in every room.
He added that the floors weren’t dirty but rather comprised of black slate, which will always “turn feet black no matter how clean the floor is.”
“Much of the video was fabricated to look bad,” Scott declared. “I would not recommend other host to accept any reservations request from this renter.”
