Artist captures drone images of sharks in the Hamptons

A New York artist has captured stunning drone images that show sharks hidden in the waters less than 30 feet off Hamptons beaches.

Joanna Steidle, 50, who has been flying drones since 2015, recently captured several sharks swimming close to the Southampton shore.

“It’s a whole new world,” she told the BBC.

“It’s a whole new perspective.”

Steidle, who grew up in the Hamptons, says she goes out to the beach every morning, and aims her drone at schools of bait fish that swim in warm waters close to shore.

The predators soon follow, she said.

“The way they move and the way they interact with the species around them is fascinating,” she said.

“It’s like they’re sharing a big buffet.”

Steidle is not the only one using a drone to track the predators.

With shark sightings on the rise this summer in waters off the coast of New York and New Jersey, New York officials deployed 60 shark-monitoring drones across Long Island and city beaches to protect swimmers.
