Nearly half of US adults think Biden did something ‘illegal’ regarding Hunter: poll

Almost half of Americans think President Biden did something “illegal” with respect to his son’s business dealings abroad, including a majority of Republicans and independents, a new poll shows.

The Yahoo News/YouGov survey published Wednesday finds 48% of Americans say the president did something “illegal regarding Hunter Biden,” while just 31% say he did not. The remaining 21% said they were “not sure” of the president’s culpability.

Those who think Biden did something illegal includes 85% of Republicans and 54% of independents, while 64% of Democrats say Biden did nothing unlawful.

A slightly lower 41% of Americans say Biden was “involved” in his son’s business, more than the 31% who say he was not. The poll also found 43% say Joe Biden “made money off” Hunter’s deals while 28% say he did not.

Forty-eight percent of Americans say the president did something “illegal regarding Hunter Biden,” whereas 31% say he did not, according to a Yahoo News/YouGov survey published Thursday.

Relatedly, 47% of Americans said yes to the statement “Joe Biden and his family are corrupt,” compared with 33% who say the first family is not corrupt. Another 19% said they were undecided.

Meanwhile, 67% of Americans say Hunter Biden, 53, definitely or probably did something illegal — including 88% of Republicans, 77% of independents and 55% of Democrats.

Most Americans (62%) also approve of Hunter Biden being indicted earlier this month on gun charges — and 55% would support a future indictment for peddling access to his father to land “foreign business deals.”

Just 13% oppose Hunter’s indictment by special counsel David Weiss on three counts of making false statements about his drug use. The first son is due to appear in federal court on Oct. 3 to enter his plea.

Meanwhile, more Americans oppose than support impeaching the president after House Republicans launched an inquiry into the matter last week, with 42% against impeachment and and 37% in favor. Another 20% of respondents remain unsure.

A slightly higher 45% of respondents say Biden should not be removed from office, compared with 36% who say he should.

Among Republicans polled, 70% favor the president being impeached and removed from office, while 40% of independents and 7% of Democrats agree.

However, a slightly higher 43% of Americans approve of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry than the 38% who disapprove. 

A previous Yahoo News/YouGov poll conducted two weeks after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot showed 51% of Americans supported an impeachment of former President Donald Trump and 39% opposed it.

Trump, 77, has been indicted in four jurisdictions on 91 counts related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, retain classified documents post-presidency and hide payments of “hush money” to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

He faces a maximum sentence of 712 years and six months in prison if convicted on all charges.

When surveyed by Yahoo News/YouGov in August, 46% of Americans said the Trump family was “more corrupt” than the Bidens, while 36% said the reverse.

This month’s poll found 41% still believed the Trump family to be “more corrupt,” while 38% said the Biden family was “more corrupt.”

The recent Yahoo News/YouGov survey also shows Trump and Biden tied at 44% support among registered voters ahead of a potential 2024 general election matchup.

The poll surveyed 1,636 US adults from Sept. 14-18, with a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.7 percentage points.
