I let my kids shave my head after terminal cancer diagnosis — they made me feel beautiful

After learning she has less than a year to live, mom-of-two Jenny Appleford let her children shave her head as she undergoes treatment to extend her life.

In July, physicians informed popular California-based “mommy influencer” Appleford, 36, that she would likely only live for an estimated six-to-nine months before succumbing to stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to her brain.

Since receiving the devastating news, she has undergone therapies to buy herself more time with her loved ones — but it has caused a large portion of her hair to fall out.

“After two-plus years of battling cancer, I am finally balding,” Jenny said in a heart-wrenching YouTube video shared with her 112,000 loyal followers this week while sitting alongside her husband, Kyle Appleford.

Her scalp now sports tufts of hair in the back of head, while a few wispy strands remained on the mostly hairless spots.

Jenny enlisted the help of her son, Ellis, 7, and daughter Winnie, 3, to help her makeup her face and trim her thinning head of hair to “look more like her bald Barbie doll.” She revealed on camera that her tots likened her to a “grandpa” with her new ‘do — and she hoped the process of removing her remaining hair would be cathartic for the entire family.

“I’m nervous to see how it’s going for her,” the concerned mom said in the video as her “very smart” daughter, Winnie, attended a virtual therapy session. “She struggles with the news that I’m dying and we wanna get her some help because I can’t imagine how hard it is as a 4-year-old going through this … She seems to completely understand — it’s a bummer.”

The ceremonial process of shaving off her remaining hair was merely an attempt to shed the dread with those closest to her, she said. The end result: Her children and husband made her feel “really special and beautiful,” the brave mom declared.

Debuting her freshly shaved head later in the clip, hubby Kyle gushed it was “the most gorgeous thing” he’s “ever seen.”

“I didn’t cry today, I’m really proud of myself,” Jenny said, recalling how she’s consistently shed tears with her loved ones in previous days as she watched her tresses fall out.

“Watching it fall out is weird,” she added. “It’s scarier than you’d imagine. It makes you more uncomfortable than you’d imagine.”

While she’s lost hair with previous treatments, it was never enough to leave her completely bald, she explained.

Jenny has been battling cancer since 2021, when she was diagnosed with inoperable stage 3 non-small cell adenocarcinoma — a type of lung cancer — despite never having smoked, documenting her journey on YouTube where she now touts 117,000 subscribers.

While she’s undergone chemotherapy and radiation while also receiving surgeries and a concoction of medications, but the cancer eventually spread to her lymph nodes and brain last year, progressing to stage 4.

Earlier this month, she broke the heartbreaking news to her children that she was dying, which Kyle said made him “sick to my stomach.”

The family has raised over $135,000 on GoFundMe, which will go towards medical bills, alternative treatment methods, insurance and travel for treatments, as well as making the end of her life as comfortable as possible.

While they aren’t “giving up” quite yet, they have to be “realistic,” Kyle said in a previous video, noting that lung cancer “is an absolute beast of a cancer.”

Upon receiving the terminal prognosis, the heartbroken mom has made it clear she only wants to be surrounded by “positivity.”

“Jenny has said that if we ever hit this point, if we ever get this news, that she has one rule,” Kyle said. “And that’s for her to be surrounded by family and positivity.”
