Pro-DeSantis PAC savages Trump for failure to appoint prosecutor against Hillary Clinton

A Super PAC aligned with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is roasting Donald Trump in a new commercial for reneging on his vow to investigate Hillary Clinton following his 2016 election victory.

In the spot titled, “Forget It,” the Never Back Down PAC attacks the 77-year-old former president, who promised last week to appoint a special counsel to go after the Biden family over first son Hunter’s influence-peddling activities.

The ad includes footage from Trump’s second 2016 debate against Clinton, in which he said: “I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation.”

At the time, the former first lady and senator from New York was under fire for using a personal email server to conduct business — including sending and receiving classified information — while secretary of state.

At that same debate, Trump told Clinton: “We’re going to look into it. Because you know what? People have been — their lives have been destroyed for doing one-fifth of what you’ve done. And it’s a disgrace. And honestly, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.”

In the ad, Trump is shown telling supporters: “Honestly, she should be locked up” in response to the now-notorious “Lock her up” rallying cry.

But two weeks after winning the presidency, the ad notes, Trump changed his tune and announced he wouldn’t appoint a special counsel.

“I don’t want to hurt the Clintons, I really don’t,” Trump said at the time. “She went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways.”

Trump’s campaign shrugged off attacks from DeSantis’ allies, harping on the Florida governor’s recent remarks warning that conservative lawmakers shouldn’t be “listless vessels” beholden to one personality.

“Ron DeSantis spent his weekend cosplaying as Crooked Hillary by having his own ‘basket of deplorables’ moment by calling Trump supporters ‘listless vessels.’ The disrespect he has shown for patriots across the country disqualifies him as a candidate,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told The Post.

During the 2016 election cycle, Trump rhetorically carpet-bombed many of his foes such as Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) before attempting to make amends after he secured the nomination.

The former president’s vow to investigate his successor followed his fourth indictment in under five months, this one related to his attempt to overturn the 2020 election result in Georgia.

“As soon as I am re-elected, I will appoint a real special counsel or maybe you’ll call it a special prosecutor … to look at all of these bribes, kickbacks, crimes, as well as the shameless attempt to cover up,” Trump pledged. “Justice will be done.”

DeSantis himself has repeatedly gone after Trump for not fulfilling his 2016 campaign promises.

“I remember these rallies in 2016. It was exciting … ‘DRAIN THE SWAMP!’ I also remember ‘Lock her up! Lock her up!’ then two weeks after the election [Trump said] ‘Oh, forget about it. Forget I ever said that,’” DeSantis recalled at a stop in New Hampshire last month.

“One thing you’ll get from me: If I tell you I’m going to do something, I’m not just saying that for an election,” DeSantis added. “Even if you’re successful at draining it, the next guy can just refill it. I want to Break the Swamp.”

The Florida governor recently mused that Trump was likely skipping Wednesday’s first GOP debate to avoid accountability for failing to live up to his promises.

“For example, he’s out there now saying he’s going to do a special counsel to go after Joe Biden. But in 2016, Trump said he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton, but he got elected and ‘said, ‘Oh, never mind! We’re not going to do that.’ He let her off the hook!’” DeSantis said on the “Guy Benson Show” last week.

Never Back Down has also previously blasted Trump for seeking to mend fences with Clinton.

Trump is currently trouncing all of his Republican foes, with a commanding 40.9-percentage point lead in the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate, an edge that has grown in recent weeks even as his legal woes mount.

Buoyed by his polling numbers, Trump announced Sunday night that he will not take part in Wednesday’s Fox News debate. He is expected to release an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson as counterprogramming.
