Tyler Adams’ girlfriend recaps World Cup journey before USMNT vs. Iran

Tyler Adams’ longtime girlfriend, Sarah Schmidt, is savoring her 2022 World Cup experience.

Hours before Tuesday’s highly anticipated matchup between the USMNT and Iran, Schmidt took to Instagram, where she shared a handful of photos from her time in Qatar, so far.

Captioning the post with red, white and blue heart emojis, Schmidt — who has been dating Adams for more than three years — can be seen embracing the 23-year-old midfielder in the stands, as well as posing outside of one of the venues while holding an American flag.

In response to Schmidt’s post, several fans passed along their well-wishes to Adams, who was named the captain of the USMNT earlier this month.

“Pls tell tyler we love him and we are so proud of him,” one fan replied, while another wrote, in part, “Best of luck for the game today.”

The USMNT needs a win over Iran to advance to the knockout stage. Their first two matches resulted in draws against Wales and England.

On the eve of Tuesday’s match, Adams and head coach Gregg Berhalter took part in a surreal press conference, where every subject except soccer seemed to be on the table. Adams, who was told by an Iranian journalist during the media session that he mispronounced Iran, gave a response to remember when asked about discrimination in the US.

“Growing up for me, I grew up in a white family with obviously an African-American heritage and background as well,” said Adams, who currently plays for Leeds United in the Premier League. “So I had a little bit of different cultures, I was very easily able to assimilate in different cultures. Not everyone has that ease and the ability to do that and obviously it takes longer to understand. Through education, I think it’s super-important. Like you just educated me now on the pronunciation of your country. It’s a process. As long as you see progress, that’s the most important thing.”

The match between the U.S. and Iran gets underway at 2 p.m. ET.
