Chicago mom speaks out after drunk felon killed daughter in DUI crash

A Chicago mother who lost her daughter after a car accident with a drunk felon revealed she “breaks every single day” as she continues to demand justice.

Stephanie Maze lost her daughter Amelia Mazeikis, 18, and her daughter’s friend D’Shaun Tudela on June 10 after felon Deni Rubio, 32, crashed into the pair’s car.

“I have experienced no pain like this before. I wake up and I break every single day, over and over again,” Maze told CBS 2.

Mazeikis had been driving her friend to work around 9 a.m. when Rubio, who was on probation for a weapons charge, blew a red light and crashed into her car, CBS 2 reported.

Rubio’s truck rolled into a ditch and it was later discovered that his BAC was twice over the legal limit and had crack cocaine in his pocket, according to Fox 32.

“He is a murderer,” the heartbroken mother said. “He murdered these two children. Not one. Two.

“When these teens died, every person that they had had in their life died a little bit with them.”

As the felon was being arrested, he allegedly tried to grab an officer’s gun. It took nine officers to subdue him, according to CBS 2.

Rubio was charged with two counts of reckless homicide, six counts of aggravated DUI, one count of attempting to disarm an officer, and one count of possession of cocaine.

He pleaded not guilty on Friday. He has been ordered to take a substance abuse course while in the Cook County Jail, according to CBS News.

Maze said she does not want her daughter’s case to be forgotten, saying: “Whatever we can do to continue to fight for this beautiful person, I want to do it.

“She was the type of person who would win a competition – and then feel bad for the people that didn’t win, and want to give them her trophy.”

Tudela’s mother, Krystal Tudela, said she is finding it hard to cope after her son’s death and that she is trying to not shut down.
