Trump charged with conspiracy, obstruction over Jan. 6: report

Former President Donald Trump may soon face charges of conspiracy, civil rights violations, and obstruction of justice following a Justice Department investigation into his actions on and before Jan. 6, 2021.

Trump, 77, said his attorneys had received a target letter Sunday from special counsel Jack Smith in connection with charges stemming from the Capitol riot.

The letter cited potential violations by the former president of laws against conspiring to commit an offense or to defraud the United States, deprivation of rights under color of law, and tampering with a witness, victim, or informant, Rolling Stone reported.

No one else has been charged in the Jan. 6 investigation, and there was no mention of charges of sedition or insurrection, an anonymous source told the outlet.

A spokesman for Smith’s office declined to comment.

Todd Blanche, Trump’s lead attorney in the case, did not respond to a request for comment.

The charges would mark the third indictment this year for the former president, who has already been hit with 37 counts by Smith for his alleged mishandling of classified documents and by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for purportedly falsifying business records related to alleged “hush money” payments to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

The 45th president, who has pleaded not guilty in both cases, is the first sitting or former commander-in-chief in US history to be indicted by the federal government.

On Tuesday, the current 2024 GOP presidential front-runner revealed on his Truth Social account that he was given “a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment” — and called the probe a  “WITCH HUNT” and “ELECTION INTERFERENCE” in his anticipated face-off with President Biden.

The ex-commander-in-chief also pressured former Vice President Mike Pence to decline to certify ballots from key swing states.

Pence, 63, has maintained the Constitution did not give him the authority to do so and holds his former boss responsible for the riot, writing in his 2022 memoir “So Help Me God” that Trump’s “reckless words … endangered my family and all those serving at the Capitol and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

In April, the former vice president sat for seven hours before the grand jury to answer questions about Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election result.

Jared Kushner, the son-in-law and former adviser to the president, and his former attorney Rudy Giuliani have also been questioned by the grand jury.

A rep for the former mayor said Tuesday that he had not received a similar target letter for charges related to the events of Jan. 6.

“Any speculation that Mayor Rudy Giuliani ‘flipped’ against President Donald Trump is as false as previous lies that America’s Mayor was somehow a Russian Agent,” Ted Goodman, an adviser to Giuliani, said in a statement. “In order to ‘flip’ on President Trump — as so many in the anti-Trump media are fantasizing over — Mayor Giuliani would’ve had to commit perjury because all the information he has regarding this case points to President Trump’s innocence.”
