Son faked his dead mom’s voice to con grieving dad of $70K

A lowlife son posed as his dead mom to scam over $70,000 from his grieving dad.

Over a 14-month period between 2017 and 2018, Daniel Cuthbert drained his father’s entire life savings.

His father started to become suspicious of the missing money sometime in the middle of 2017 and actually confronted him about it, but the dad was too defeated by grief to do anything more than a confrontation.

However, things got more serious when an official from the dad’s building society in the United Kingdom paid him a visit in 2018 to inform him that he was going to lose his home due to his debts — which led to an investigation by Northamptonshire Police’s Volume Fraud team and ultimately to Cuthbert’s arrest.

“This was a really despicable abuse of trust by this man who falsely represented his father and even his late mother, in order to defraud them out of more than £56,000 [$73,384],” Sergeant Mike Rogers told South West News Service.

The 42-year-old moved large amounts of money into his own account, including his whole redundancy payout — which is a payment from an employer to an employee when their job becomes redundant and is no longer needed.

Cuthbert made several phone calls to banks pretending to be his father, Preston Crown Court heard — and would even “put on a female voice” pretending to be his late mom to make transfers on at least nine occasions.

Northamptonshire Police released footage that caught Cuthbert making a call in a female-sounding voice, saying, “I’d like to make a payment please.” He walked through the security questions with the call handler before saying that he wanted to transfer about $200 to “D.W. Cuthbert” — his own account.

He posed as his deceased mother eight times to transfer a total of nearly $12,000 from his father’s account into his own, the court heard.

Cuthbert allegedly also took out loans in his father’s name — which ultimately led the father to lose his house, thanks to being buried in large amounts of debt.

“This was a complex investigation, but due to some excellent work by the lead investigator, Cuthbert has been jailed and will now have plenty of time to reflect on his actions,” Rogers said. “We hope this brings some closure to the victim who was put through a horrendous ordeal by his son only months after losing his wife.”
