Grieving family of slain Tennessee doctor issues emotional statement

The family of a beloved Tennessee doctor who was allegedly shot dead by a patient remembered him as a “family man” in an emotional tribute — and expressed their appreciation “for the outpouring of love and support” following the “senseless” killing.

Dr. Benjamin Mauck, ​an orthopedic surgeon killed in an examination room at Campbell Clinic Orthopedics in Collierville. was remembered for all of his contributions in the statement on Thursday.

​“Ben was a surgeon, husband, father, son, brother, mentor, and friend. As we grieve this tragedy, our family is choosing to focus on the positive contributions Ben made to the world, personally and professionally,” Mauck’s family said though their lawyer, ​Blanchard Tual, Fox 13 Memphis reported.

“Amid his professional contributions, Ben remained a family man, first and foremost. He and his wife cherished their beloved children and spent many special moments with family and friends,” they added.

They also expressed gratitude for the messages of condolence that they have received.

​”Thank you for the outpouring of love and support from throughout the Mid-South, along with ​​the medical community around the globe. Our family is grateful for the kind words and stories that continue to be shared,” the statement said.

“These are a testament to the positive impact Ben made on his patients, his colleagues and our community,” said the loved ones, who called the killing a “senseless act of violence.”

The family also asked for space to “grieve privately.”

Meanwhile, Mauck’s clinic also released a message of condolences and sorrow.

“We remain shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of Dr. Ben Mauck. Our hearts are heavy, and we are keeping Dr. Mauck’s family, friends, and colleagues in our prayers at this time,” ​Campbell Clinic said.

It noted that all of its locations have resumed normal business hours except the one in Collierville, which will remain closed.

“We recognize that returning to work may be accompanied by various emotions and we want to assure you that the safety, and mental and emotional well-being of our employees and patients is of the utmost importance to us,” it said.

The clinic added that additional security measures, including extra police patrols, have been put in place at all its locations.

On Thursday, Mauck’s alleged shooter, Larry Pickens, appeared in court on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault and was held on $1.2 million bail.

He is accused of shooting Mauck three times – including in his neck, chest and upper abdomen – in the examination room, according to a police report.

In addition to his young kids, Mauck is survived by his wife, Rhiannon.
